Each year, the federal presence in this area and the significant tax exemptions available to federally connected personnel, businesses and agencies has made Fairfax County Public Schools eligible for federal Impact Aid grant funds. Impact Aid is a federal formula grant program designed to help school districts that with identified, federally connected students enrolled. Federally-connected students are children of active-duty, uniformed services personnel; children who live on federal property or in subsidized, federal housing; and children whose parents work on eligible federal properties.

FCPS anticipates getting about $3 million in unrestricted funds in grants, as a result of parents’ returned Impact Aid statements. The funds become a part of the school system’s general operating budget and are critical to maintaining standards for educational excellence.

We need parents’ and caregivers’ help in identifying students with federal connections, to ensure that FCPS can get its share of funds from the program.

Parents and caregivers are asked to complete a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid for each school-aged student in their household, sign and date it and return it to the child/ren’s schools by Oct. 26. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply, parents are asked to just check the box in Section 3. The survey will be distributed beginning Tuesday to all FCPS families.

Information provided will be treated confidentially.
