Have you heard about the DoD Skillbridge - Career Skills Program on Fort Belvoir? If so, then you might know the Corporate Fellowship Hiring Our Heroes program is the only fully vetted and approved one for the installation; however, it is not the only option for transitioning Service members.
A stop in the office of Brandy Walker, the Career Skills Program Installation Administrator, and you can find a variety of information ranging from programs at other military installations to transitioning services from other organizations.
One such program Walker also provides information on is Individual Internships, a chance for transitioning Service members to create a future for themselves with the company of their dreams.
This is an option for those who are looking for something different, like Spc. Nathaniel Leatherman, who recently completed his Individual Internship. After discovering there were no Career Skills Programs available in or around his hometown in Pennsylvania, he chose to find a company willing to train him, for free, for a set period of time, and, at the end of the internship the company agreed to interview him for a position. All of this took place while Leatherman received his full military benefits and while on authorized Permissive Temporary Duty.
“I can’t stress enough how amazing this program is, and how vital it can be to ensuring Soldiers have good jobs to go to as soon as they ETS,” Leatherman said. “I know the Army puts a lot of emphasis on continuing education, but it’s not for everyone. And, it’s really great to have this as an option.”
People who want more information about the services and programs provided by the Career Skills Programs and partners, can stop in Barden Education Center or attend one of the upcoming Career Skills Program information sessions.
