Nearly 20 Fort Belvoir athletes showcased their basketball skills at Wells Field House, Oct. 2 during the second and final week of tryouts for the 2018-19 elite Eagles men’s basketball team, a perennial contender in the ultra-competitive Washington Area Military Athletic Conference.
Fort Belvoir’s post-level program fields some of the area’s finest athletes each season and the tryout sessions allowed Head Coach Herb Marshall to observe new and returning players’ skills and select the final roster that will represent the installation in the forthcoming season.
WAMAC is the official athletics organization for Service members and civilians representing several metro-area military installations from every service branch. The Fort Belvoir basketball teams — the Eagles and the Lady Eagles female organization — compete each year in weekend matchups throughout the winter. The WAMAC season ends with a major, double-elimination championship.
During the tryout cycle, players demonstrated their abilities in an array of drills, including three- and five-man down-court passing; free throws; layups; mid-range and three-point jumpers and man-to-man exercises; as well as grueling defensive maneuvers.
