DLA center-forward, Kirk Gamblin, sinks a short-range shot in a crowded lane during his team's intramural basketball matchup against OCAR, Feb. 12 at Wells Field House.

Reigning Commander’s Cup champion Defense Logistics Agency, undeniably one of the ablest squads taking to the hardwood this season, gave a high-octane exhibition of the passing, shooting and defensive vehemence that has kept the unit near the top of the FY19 intramural basketball rankings all year when it trounced Office of the Chief Army Reserve 67-28, Feb. 12 at Wells Field House.

DLA’s success hinged on the passing precision between guards, Josh Kovalski, Chris Dickerson and Maurice Kirk. The trio of highly technical athletes kept the ball in constant motion around the perimeter, drawing defenders out of the zone to open up a nearly endless string of scoring opportunities for forwards, Ray Jones, and Kirk Gamblin. Veteran center, Farron Byrd, formed the lynchpin of the operation throughout the evening, haunting the lane and bringing down a string of boards and follow-up buckets.

The OCAR defense, anchored by guards, Larry Crisp and Kittrell Henderson, faced a major obstacle from the opening horn when Kovalski gave an early demonstration of his uncanny accuracy from the three-point arc which, combined with Kirk’s, Jones’ and Dickerson’s continual drives into the paint, propelled DLA to a 42-17 advantage at the halftime buzzer.

OCAR managed to get an admirable comeback effort off the line late in the first period, with Crisp hitting a series of midrange shots while Henderson and forwards, Brian Kilgore and Andre Ansley kept busy down along the baseline. But the DLA defensive determination, combined with the squad’s continued execution at the opposite end of the court put the contest out of OCAR’s reach.

The FY19 intramural basketball regular season wrapped up Wednesday. The single-elimination championship tournament between the 10 top-seeded teams begins Tuesday, 6:15 p.m., at Wells Field House.
