The Ladies Golf Association of Fort Belvoir welcomed new and returning members to the season with its annual membership meeting, March 25 at the Golf Club.
The yearly spring event increases organization awareness and invites local female golfers to learn about the league and consider membership.
According to Marlea Moriarty, association president, six new players signed up for this year’s schedule.
Tim Coolican, Golf Club general manager, opened the meeting with a brief discussion about course feature updates, new equipment and the green fee schedule for the season; and Fritz Diekmann, PGA head professional at Belvoir, added information about new Pro Shop items, tournaments and pricing specials for select events.
LGAFB board members—which included Vice President Pam Chaney, Secretary Helene McInnis, and Treasurer Kim Kohler—outlined changes to the rules, current rates and details about the major tournaments the organization will be hosting in 2019.
Golf Club staff provided attendees with a breakfast buffet.
The LGAFB is open to all female golfers eligible for membership at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club. Weekly play is Tuesday mornings (shotgun-start format), April through October. Annual dues are $65 for 18-hole group play and $10 for 9-hole group play.
The LGAFB, formed in 1957, gives female golfers a chance to share their enthusiasm for the sport in a socially competitive environment, according to a LGAFB press release. For weekly play dates, groups are comprised of players from various flights, based on handicap, and recognition is given to winners based on their individual flights.
The LGAFB also hosts several special events at the Golf Club each year, including the Spring Match tournament slated for mid-June, the Memorial and Wounded Warrior tournaments in August, and the Fall Championship between the most accomplished golfers in the league in September.
LGAFB members can also meet, socialize and compete with their counterparts in local and regional events. The Virginia State Golf Association sponsors events throughout the state, and Fort Belvoir Golf Club’s membership in the Arlington-Fairfax County Golf League, comprised of 15 golf clubs throughout Northern Virginia, gives LGAFB members a chance to represent Fort Belvoir in monthly team- and individual-match tournaments throughout the year. Locations are rotated among all member clubs.
The LGAFB welcomes all interested female golfers to join the installation’s ladies’ group to play, compete, socialize and have fun every Tuesday throughout the golf season.
