Memorial Day is a national holiday set aside to honor men and women in uniform who have given their lives in service to our country. As we pay our respects, remember the Army’s greatest assets are our people – Soldiers, civilians, retirees and families. ARMY SAFE – ARMY STRONG reflects our mission, and our goal.

The days from Memorial Day through Labor Day are considered to be the “101 Critical Days of Summer” because, statistically, we will have more accidents during this period of the year than any other. The campaign encourages every member of the Army Family to get out and enjoy all that summer has to offer, while also being vigilant about safety. Each and every member of the Fort Belvoir team is responsible for safety!

The major hazards most of us face during the summer months are recreational activities and vacation trips. Swimming, boating, fishing, and bicycling are activities that can end in tragedy if safety rules and standards are not followed. Around the home, lawn chemicals, charcoal lighter, propane barbecue grills, and other articles present hazards to adults and children.

Remember, it takes proactive leadership, discipline and teamwork to ensure everyone in the Fort Belvoir community stays safe this holiday. If traveling, drive safely and use good judgment when participating in any activity. Please don’t drink and drive; don’t drive distracted; drive drowsy or fatigued; and always use your seatbelts. Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day holiday weekend!
